Engine oil change — 7 steps
How to Change Engine Oil at Home
Beginner · 30–45 min · 4 tools needed
1
Warm up the engine
Run the bike 3–5 minutes, switch off, wait 5 min. Warm oil flows freely and drains fully.
Never drain stone-cold oil — residue stays behind
2
Position on centre stand
Level bike = accurate oil level reading when refilling. Use paddock stand if no centre stand.
Uneven ground causes false dipstick readings
3
Place drain pan, remove drain bolt
Use the correct socket size. Allow 5–10 min for full drain. Inspect bolt threads for damage.
Wrong socket = stripped aluminium sump threads
4
Remove & replace oil filter
Lube the new filter gasket with fresh oil before fitting. Hand-tighten only — never use tools to tighten.
Overtightening cracks the housing or damages the gasket
5
Reinstall drain bolt with new washer
Always fit a new copper washer. Torque to spec: 20–35 Nm depending on bike model.
Reusing old washer causes slow seep leaks
6
Refill with fresh oil
Use the exact grade from your owner’s manual (commonly 10W-40 or 15W-50). Most bikes: 2.5–3.5 litres.
Wrong viscosity damages seals under load
7
Run engine, check for leaks
Idle 2 min, check drain bolt and filter for seeps. Switch off, wait 2 min, verify oil level on sight glass.
Dispose of old oil at a recycling centre — never down drains
